No charges yet for UCLA water polo player accused of rape
Los Angeles prosecutors have declined to file charges against a UCLA water polo player arrested on suspicion of raping another student, but they said that may change.
Hakop Jack Kaplanyan, a redshirt freshman, was suspended from UCLA after his arrest earlier this month.
“All we can say is the matter is under review for filing consideration,” said Shiara Davila-Morales, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office.
Kaplanyan, who is at home in Glendale and out of jail on $200,000 bail, said the future of the case is uncertain.
UCLA officials said the woman Kaplanyan is accused of sexually assaulting are acquaintances. She filed a report with campus police late on April 2, the same day she claims he raped her in his dorm room.
Kaplanyan was arrested a few hours later, and then was reportedly released from jail two days after.
His arraignment was scheduled for Thursday, when prosecutors declined to file charges.
“We aren’t sure of anything that’s going on,” Kaplanyan said in a phone interview with the Glendale News-Press.
His attorney, Berc Agopoglu, said he will try to get UCLA to re-admit his client, according to a posting on his law firm’s Facebook account.
“That’s what I’m looking forward to,” Kaplanyan said.
