Cold weather alert issued for Antelope, San Fernando valleys

Share

Even though temperatures throughout most of the Southland on Thursday were warmer than earlier in the week, Los Angeles County’s top health officer extended a cold weather alert for the San Fernando and Antelope valleys.

The alert comes as forecasts for those areas show wind chill temperatures could be below freezing.

The alert for the Antelope Valley lasts from Thursday through Sunday. In the San Fernando Valley, the alert covers Thursday through Saturday.

“We also want to remind people not to use stoves, barbecues or ovens to heat their homes due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning,” Jonathan E. Fielding, the county’s director of public health, said in a statement.

Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headaches, nausea and shortness of breath, health officials said.

Officials also warned residents to protect themselves from the cold.

“There are places where people can go to stay warm, such as shelters or other public facilities,” Fielding said.

Forecasters say L.A. area temperatures are expected to swing from frigid to above normal next week, with daytime highs about 80 degrees inland.

Daytime temperatures this week will remain in the 60s to 70s, but on Saturday, that will start to change as they inch up a few degrees. By Sunday, highs are expected to be in the 70s at the beaches and about 80 degrees inland, the weather service said.
