False report of gun at South Coast Plaza started with dispute
Reports of a man with a gun Friday night at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, later determined to be unfounded, began as a verbal dispute between two customers, police said.
Costa Mesa police Lt. Bryan Glass said the incident began as a verbal dispute between a man and woman at the Salvatore Ferragamo store.
The woman told a clerk that the man had a gun. Police responded to the clerk’s police call about 7:30 p.m. and within minutes had detained the man.
They did not find a weapon, Glass said.
No arrests were made. Police did not issue an evacuation or lockdown of the area, Glass said.
Several shoppers reported on Twitter, however, that parts of the mall were shut down for a time.
