Assault weapon used against officers is recovered, LAPD says
Los Angeles police said they have found a Tec-9 Mini assault weapon they believe a suspect attempted to fire at officers Wednesday night.
LAPD officers conducted a traffic stop at 6:23 p.m. in the 1100 block of South West Boulevard in South L.A. when a passenger quickly got out of the vehicle and pointed an assault weapon at the officers which jammed when he tried to open fire, said Officer Christopher No.
Officers fired at the suspect and the gunman fled on foot, ducking into a backyard. No said he apparently dropped his gun after the attempted shooting. The LAPD set up a perimeter for blocks around the crime scene.
No officers were injured and the driver was taken into custody. The suspect eventually was tracked down by a police dog and arrested without incident and did not suffer any injuries, police said.
The would-be shooter was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and may face additional charges. Police did not immediately release his name or age.
The weapon, a Tec-9 Mini, is classified as an illegal assault weapon under California law, police said.
It was the second gun-related incident involving police in less than 12 hours. A robbery suspect died of wounds sustained Wednesday morning in an officer-involved shooting in the skid row area of downtown L.A., authorities said.
