Authorities are asking for the public’s help as they continue to investigate the shooting death of a security guard outside an upscale apartment complex in Marina del Rey.

Patrick Odoikyene, 47, was discovered in a parking lot early Monday with multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheriff’s officials describe the suspect as a black male with a stocky, muscular build, a shaved head, a goatee and a medium complexion. They said the suspect was last seen running from the location toward the 3400 block of Via Dolce Street in Marina del Rey.

A person with knowledge of the incident who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation was still ongoing said Odoikyene is part of the apartment complex’s “courtesy patrol” team. The source said team members assist the complex’s residents and visitors.

Residents also told The Times that the South Los Angeles victim was well-liked and talkative.

One man, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because building management asked residents not to speak with the press, said Odoikyene would help carry people’s boxes and groceries. He also ”was the one that knew how the whole place worked,” the resident said, meaning in part that Odoikyene could calmly handle fire alarms and deliveries to the building.

“Some of the other security guards were more quiet. He was talkative,” the resident said. “The guy always had a smile on.... He was wonderful.”

According to The Times Homicide Report, only one other homicide has occurred in Marina del Rey since Jan. 1, 2007.

The complex, called Shores, is a 544-apartment complex that opened this year. Its developers and managers previously told The Times that the property was meant to target people seeking the California beach lifestyle and people who work in the technology, media and entertainment businesses flourishing on the Westside. Rents at the complex range from about $2,200 to about $4,000 per month.
