There were so many intriguing story lines for Wednesday’s Beverly Hills tournament game between Loyola and Brentwood.

There was former Loyola assistant Ryan Bailey taking on his mentor, Loyola Coach Jamal Adams.

There was Arizona State-bound point guard Tra Holder of Brentwood facing off against Arizona-bound Parker Jackson-Cartwright. There was 7-foot UCLA signee Thomas Welsh of Loyola taking on 6-7 Maxwell Kupchak, the son of the Lakers general manager.

It created for an intense, tight battle, with No. 3-ranked Loyola (6-0) barely prevailing, 58-52. Bailey and Adams hugged afterward, probably both relieved that the matchup was over.

“Outside of my family, there’s no one I’m closer to,” Adams said of Bailey. “I can easily say they’re my second favorite basketball team in the world. Just not today.”

Said Bailey: “My guys fought hard.”

Holder, who scored 26 points, made consecutive three-pointers in the fourth quarter to give Brentwood a 51-50 lead with just under three minutes left.

Right on cue, Jackson-Cartwright then scored eight consecutive points to close out the victory on two baskets and four consecutive free throws. And Welsh had 21 points and 19 rebounds before fouling out. Loyola advances to a 6:30 p.m. semifinal game on Friday against Cantwell-Sacred Heart, a 73-29 winner over San Gabriel Academy. Joey Covarrubias had 26 points for Cantwell and helped hold Marcus LoVett Jr. to 13 points after he had scored 35 and 44 points the last two games.

Gardena Serra advanced to the 8 p.m. semifinal with a 62-51 win over Leuzinger. Tavrion Dawson scored 23 points and Ronnie Freeman had 13 points and 12 reobunds. Davon Abner scored 17 points for Leuzinger.

Beverly Hills (6-1) upset View Park Prep, 64-60, with senior guard Siavash Yektafar scoring 24 points. Chance Comanche had 19 for View Park, which was playing its second game of the day after winning a Coliseum League game over West Adams, 82-36. Kyle Young had 12 points in the third quarter when the Normans opened a 13-point lead. Beverly Hills will play Serra on Friday in the semifinals.
