After falling behind, 20-13, Birmingham rallied for a 28-20 victory over Fairfax on Thursday night, getting a goal-line stand, then a 97-yard touchdown run by sophomore Sterling Salguero to pull out the win.

It was another sterling performance from Salguero, who rushed for 211 yards. His older brother, Eldridge, caught a 19-yard touchdown pass.

Fairfax (0-3) fell behind, 13-0, but made a nice comeback behind quarterback Myles Bowen, who passed for 266 yards. Sophomore Ramses Hernandez scored on a four-yard run to cut the Lions’ deficit to 13-7 just before halftime.

In the third quarter, it was all Fairfax. Jenabu Edwards had a 16-yard touchdown run and Bowen had a one-yard run to put Fairax on top, 20-13.

But quarterback Emanuel Castro of Birmingham kept his composure and guided the Patriots back into the lead. He connected with Koran Pearsall on a 20-yard touchdown pass. When Sterling Salguero ran in the two-point conversion, Birmingham led, 21-20.

Fairfax had an opportunity to take the lead with six minutes left. On fourth-and-goal from the one, Bowen tried to sneak the ball in, but Birmingham’s defensive line stopped him at the goal line. Soon afterward, Sterling Salguero broke loose on a 97-yard touchdown run, and the Patriots improved to 3-0.

Fairfax sophomore receiver Kenny Allen caught four passes for 133 yards.
