Baseball: Loyola is emerging as No. 1 candidate

Share

I haven’t put together a preseason top 25 in high school baseball just yet, but Loyola is a candidate to be No. 1.

The Cubs unveiled pitchers Quinn Brodey and Nathan Hadley on Saturday in the JSerra tournamen. Brodey threw two shutout innings and Hadley threw three shutout innings. Brodey is headed to Stanford, Hadley is headed to UCLA. The Cubs also have Arizona-bound Kyle Beadles and Jack Poulsen, a USC walk-on, on the mound, so playing as many games as possible gives the Cubs an advantage.

Loyola defeated Mission Viejo, 6-4, and JSerra, 4-2. Dustin Shirley had two doubles. He has been on a hitting tear in the winter.

Birmingham tied El Toro, 4-4, and lost to JSerra, 5-1. Freshman Justin Rorick had a single and double for Birmingham and Joey Medellin allowed two hits and threw five innings agaisnt JSerra. Tommy Flores had two hits and three RBIs against El Toro.

On Sunday, Birmingham defeated Anaheim Canyon, 2-0. Adrian Rodriguez threw five shutout innings and Rorick had two more hits.

In the Pepperdine tournament, sophomore left-hander Nathan Flores of Orange Lutheran struck out eight in four innings against Palisades. Sam Shaikin had four hits for Chatsworth. The Chancellors played two games, including a 3-3 tie with Huntington Beach.

Alemany has gone 3-0 in the tournament with wins over Tesoro, Dana Hills and De La Salle.

Santa Margarita knocked off Loyola, 11-8, on Sunday, with Griffin Cannying and Andrew Mendonca contributing key RBIs.
