Boys’ basketball: Loyola takes over first place in Mission League

When Monday night ended, Los Angeles Loyola found itself all alone in first place in the Mission League.

Thomas Welsh scored 25 points and had 13 rebounds and Parker Jackson-Cartwright contributed 19 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds to lead the Cubs past Alemany, 86-66.

Coupled with St. Francis’ 54-46 upset win over Chaminade, Loyola is now 19-1 overall and 5-1 in league. Alemany and Chaminade each dropped to 4-2 in league.

Max Hazzard added 18 points for the Cubs, who had a 37-33 halftime lead. Thomas Lapham contributed a pair of three-pointers in the third quarter to help ignite a Loyola surge. Alemany still hasn’t figured out what to do with the 7-foot Welsh, a UCLA signee. He had 28 points and 20 rebounds last season against the Warriors.

Sophomores Daron Henson and Shacquille Dawkins led Alemany with 23 and 17 points, respectively.

St. Francis pulled off the upset of the night with its home victory over Chaminade (16-3). Kyle Leufroy scored 19 points and Noah Willerford had 18. Jack Williams led Chaminade with 23 points. Crespi (15-6, 3-3) held off Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 50-47. DJ Ursery scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds.

Sherman Oaks Buckley improved to 25-0 with an 80-72 nonleague win over Taft. Austin Butler scored 30 points and Astin Beal had 13 rebounds. Chris Sandifer had 31 points for Taft.

Pacific Hills Coach Ivan Barahona won his 200th career game with 74-45 win over Wildwood.

In the Marmonte League, Calabasas defeated Agoura, 64-48. Austin Smith scored 18 points and Jeremy Lieberman 14.

In the Western League, Elijah Stewart scored 21 points in Westchester’s 68-53 win over University. C.J. Sinada had 19 points for University. Fairfax defeated Venice, 92-60. Sage Woodruff led the Lions with 27 points.

In the Eastern League, South Gate defeated Jordan, 59-46. Gerardo Zavala and Joshua Conde each had 15 points.
