Boys’ basketball: State championship matchups

Six state titles will be decided in boys’ basketball on Friday and Saturday at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento. Here’s a look at the matchups.

Open: Santa Ana Mater Dei (34-0) vs. Bishop O’Dowd (28-4), Saturday at 8 p.m.: Mater Dei is going for its fourth consecutive state title and 11th under Coach Gary McKnight. It’s the final game for Stanley Johnson, whose legacy as the best player in Mater Dei history is already complete. To win, the Monarchs need to contain 6-foot-10 Ivan Rabb. MJ Cage got into foul trouble the last time the two teams played in overtime in December. He figures to be a key player for the Monarchs.

Division I: Corona Centennial (29-3) vs. Monte Vista (31-1), Friday at 8 p.m.: It’s a senior-dominated Monte Vista team that will test the Huskies, who have plenty of athleticism and talent with Deontae North, averaging 21 points, and junior point guard Sedrick Barefield. The key will be Centennial not relying on three-pointers in an arena where making outside shots can be difficult.

Division II: St. John Bosco (22-11) vs. Folsom (32-2), Saturday at 4 p.m.: It took 33 games for the Braves to play drama-free, unselfish basketball. If they repeat their performance from the regional final, Folsom will be in trouble. St. John Bosco is used to the big stage, so playing in a professional arena won’t be a big adjustment. Sophomore guard Jordan Ford of Folsom is a top player.

Division III: Chaminade (26-6) vs. Drake (26-7), Friday at 4 p.m.: The Eagles were given a second chance because of the buzzer beater shot by Michael Oguine in the regional final. That should allow them to relax, especially 6-8 Jack Williams, who desperately wants to deliver a state title. Trevor Stanback, a 6-10 sophomore, will be tough to defend. And there’s the growing confidence of Oguine, a junior who’s already establishing himself as a player to watch for next season. Drake has the size to match up with the Eagles.

Division IV: Bishop Montgomery (27-6) vs. Moreau Catholic (27-6), Saturday at noon: With only one senior on its team, the youthful Knights will try to use experience gained from the Southern Section Open Division playoffs. In guards Justin Bibbins and Stephen Thompson Jr., Bishop Montgomery should have an advantage and try to erase the bad memories from losing in the 2009 final on a buzzer beater.

Division V: Renaissance (24-7) vs. Alameda St. Joseph Notre Dame (30-5), Friday at noon: Renaissance had better have lifted some weights this week, because 6-7 Temidayo Yussuf is an imposing player in the middle. Junior guard Marquise Mosley has come on strong for Renaissance.
