Football: Lompoc junior running back Derrick Portis is making impact
In the Western Division, where Gardena Serra and West Hills Chaminade are the teams to beat, there are other teams trying to prepare to challenge the Cavaliers and Eagles. One team is Lompoc, which improved to 3-1 after a 44-21 win over Dos Pueblos.
Junior running back Derrick Portis is beginning to earn respect. He rushed for 177 yards in 17 carries and scored three touchdowns. He’s averaging 8.4 yards per carry on the season. A.J. Florez added 163 yards in 22 carries and scored three touchdowns.
Lompoc also has one of the best defensive linemen in the state in Ainuu Taua, who recorded five sacks.
