The Times’ baseball rankings: power and speed

The Dodgers’ Matt Kemp last year finished one home run shy of becoming only the fifth player in Major League Baseball history to hit 40 homers and steal 40 bases in the same season.

Last year, there were four 30-30 players and five more who hit at least 20 home runs with 20 steals. Times’ baseball editor Mike Hiserman looks at the players who currently offer their teams the best combination of power and speed:

Matt Kemp, OF, Dodgers: He said before last season he would be a 40-40 man, and it seemed a longshot at the time. Now he’s talking 50-50 …

Curtis Granderson, OF, NY Yankees: Had 25 steals, career-high 41 homers last season. Averaged 28 homers, 19 steals, 12 triples last five seasons.

Ryan Braun, OF, Milwaukee: Had 33 homers, 33 steals last season as National League MVP. Has averaged 32 homers, 19 steals in five seasons.

Ian Kinsler, 2B, Texas: In 2009 and ‘11, his last two full seasons, slugged 63 homers with 61 steals.

Carlos Gonzalez, OF, Colorado: Only 26, he’s averaged 30 homers, 23 steals in two full big-league seasons.

Hanley Ramirez, 3B, Miami: They messed with success, moving a player who averaged 22 homers, 36 steals in six full seasons as a shortstop.

B.J. Upton, OF, Tampa Bay: Averaged 17 homers, 37 steals last five seasons. Had 23 homers, 36 steals last year.

Justin Upton, OF, Arizona: Only 24, has averaged 25 homers and 20 steals in three seasons, including 31 homers and 21 steals last year.

Chris Young, OF, Arizona: Averaged 23 homers, 20 steals over five full seasons and is off to fast start with five homers, two steals this season.

David Wright, 3B, NY Mets: Averaged 24 homers and 21 steals in seven seasons.

Andrew McCutchen, OF, Pittsburgh: Only 25, he’s averaged 20 homers and 28 steals in two full seasons.

Jacoby Ellsbury, OF, Boston: Had 32 homers, 39 steals last year. Before that, had stolen as many as 70 but never hit more than nine homers.

Drew Stubbs, OF, Cincinnati: Has 37 homers, 70 steals in two full seasons.

Dustin Pedroia, 2B, Boston: Had 17 homers, 54 doubles, 20 steals in 2008. In two full healthy seasons since, averaged 18 homers, 43 doubles, 23 steals.

Jayson Werth, OF, Washington: Coming off 20-homers, 19-steals first season with Nationals. Averaged 27 homers, 18 steals from 2008-2011.

Jimmy Rollins, SS, Philadelphia: Three-time 20-20 club member is now 33, but coming off a 16-homers, 30-steals season.

Jose Reyes, SS, Miami: In 10th season and still only 29, averaged 16 triples, 14 homers, 65 steals from 2005-2008. Last season, had 16 triples, seven homers, 39 steals in 126 games.

Adam Jones, OF, Baltimore: Could be ready for breakout with five homers, three steals already. Had 25 homers, 12 steals last year.

Ben Zobrist, Util., Tampa Bay: Mr. Consistent has averaged 19 homers, 20 steals in three full seasons. Had 20 homers, 19 steals last year.

Shane Victorino, OF, Philadelphia: Had 17 homers, 19 steals last year. Has averaged 14 homers, 30 steals the past five seasons.

Jason Heyward, OF, Atlanta: Only 22, his big-league accomplishments project to averages of 20 homers and 14 steals over 162 games.

Carlos Beltran, OF, St. Louis: In 15th season. Has averaged 28 homers, 27 steals per 162 games in his career. Already has five homers, three steals.

Rickie Weeks, 2B, Milwaukee: Had 20 homers, nine steals last year. Has averaged 23 homers, 21 steals per 162 games.

Shin-Soo Choo, OF, Cleveland: Had 42 homers, 43 steals in 2009-10; eight homers, 12 steals in 85 games last year.

Carl Crawford, OF, Boston: Averaged 13 homers, 46 steals in nine full seasons entering 2012. Had 11 homers, 18 steals in 130 games last season.

Asdrubal Cabrera, SS, Cleveland: Had 25 homers, 17 steals in 2011.

Alex Gordon, 1B, Kansas City: Had 23 homers, 17 steals in 2011.

Jeff Francoeur, Kansas City: Had 20 homers, 19 steals in 2011.

Danny Espinosa, 2B, Washington: Had 21 homers, 17 steals in 2011.

Ryan Roberts, Util., Arizona: Had 19 homers, 18 steals in 2011.

Melky Cabrera, OF, San Francisco: Had 18 homers, 20 steals for Kansas City in 2011.
