Angels shut out by Giants, 4-0

Share

AT THE PLATE: After scoring 19 runs in their previous two Cactus League games, an Angels lineup that featured only one projected starter, Peter Bourjos, managed two hits. Giants starter Jonathan Sanchez gave up one hit in six scoreless innings.

ON THE MOUND: Dan Haren gave up three earned runs and four hits, struck out five and walked none in five innings. Pablo Sandoval and Pat Burrell keyed the Giants’ three-run fourth with run-scoring doubles. Relievers Fernando Rodney and Kevin Jepsen each threw scoreless innings, with Jepsen striking out two of three batters. Jordan Walden gave up an unearned run in the eighth.

EXTRA BASES: Bourjos ranged far into the right-center field gap to make a superb catch of Burrell’s drive to the warning track with two on to end the sixth. “Anything that stays within the foul lines,” Manager Mike Scioscia said, “is Peer’s ball.” Third baseman Alberto Callaspo (sore shoulder) made his first spring start in the field and played three chances cleanly.
