USC has hired Steve Sarkisian as its permanent head football coach, The Times has learned.

Sarkisian, a former USC assistant who has been head coach at Washington for the last five seasons, interviewed with USC Athletic Director Pat Haden on Sunday.

Sarkisian, 39, replaces interim coach Ed Orgeron, who guided USC to a 6-2 record after replacing the fired Lane Kiffin on Sept. 29.

Sarkisian is 34-29 at Washington, including 8-4 this season.

Sarkisian played quarterback at West Torrance High, El Camino College and BYU.

He was an assistant on Pete Carroll’s USC staff from 2001 to 2003 and from 2005 to 2008.
