Kirk Gibson discusses the Dodgers-Diamondbacks melee [Video]

The brawl between the Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night was pretty eventful, as baseball fights go, with Dodgers batting coach Mark McGwire taking on Arizona Manager Kirk Gibson and batting coach Matt Williams, Dodgers pitcher J.P. Howell shoving Arizona coach Turner Ward over a railing and Yasiel Puig squaring off with Eric Hinske.

The altercation ensued after Arizona pitcher Ian Kennedy hit Puig and Zack Greinke in the head with pitches, violating a cardinal rule in baseball: Never throw at someone’s head. Greinke had earlier hit Arizona catcher Miguel Montero in the back with a pitch.

Gibson spoke about the incident after the game, saying he didn’t order Kennedy to hit Greinke as retaliation for Greinke hitting Montero, but, “Do we come inside on him and make a statement? That might have been Ian’s choice. But you never try and hit anybody up high or in the head. Baseballs get away from pitchers .... We’re certainly not going to try and jeopardize anyone’s career.”
