Ryan Palmer (62) leads at Colonial

Colonial member Ryan Palmer shot an eight-under-par 62 on Thursday to match the first-round record at Hogan’s Alley and take a one-stroke lead over John Rollins at Fort Worth.

The bogey-free 62 equaled Palmer’s lowest round on the PGA Tour.

Palmer, the former Texas A&M; player who has three PGA Tour victories, and longtime caddie James Edmondson are full dues-paying members at Colonial. Edmondson is the reigning club champion.

Graham DeLaet matched Morgan Hoffmann, David Hearn and John Peterson at 64.

Defending Colonial champion Zach Johnson opened with a 69.

Jay Haas and Duffy Waldorf shared the first-round lead in the Senior PGA Championship, shooting five-under 66 at St. Louis.

The 59-year-old Haas, the winner of the major championship in 2006 and 2008, had a bogey-free round. The 50-year-old Waldorf had six birdies and one bogey.

Haas has 16 Champions Tour victories after winning nine times on the PGA Tour. Waldorf is winless in 11 career starts on the 50-and-over tour after winning four times on the PGA Tour.

South Africa’s James Kingston shot a six-under 66 to take the lead during the suspended first round of the BMW PGA Championship at Virginia Water, England.

Afternoon play was delayed for about 90 minutes because of the threat of lightning and five groups were still on the course when the round was suspended for the day because of darkness.

Sergio Garcia, the Spanish player whose verbal sparring with Tiger Woods turned ugly this week when he said he would “serve fried chicken” if he had dinner with Woods, opened with a 72.

Second-ranked Rory McIlroy bogeyed five of the last six holes for a 74.

Annie Park shot a two-under 70 in windy conditions to take the individual lead and help USC increase its lead to 17 strokes with one round left in the NCAA Women’s Golf Championships at Athens, Ga.

Park, a freshman from Levittown, N.Y., who won the Pac-12 championship and tied for first in the NCAA West Regional, had a nine-under 207 total for a two-stroke lead.

USC, 12 strokes ahead entering the day, had a three-under 285 for a 19-under 845 total. Duke was second at two under, and defending champion Alabama was tied for third at nine over with Purdue and UCLA.

Avalanche to hire Roy as coach

Hall of Fame goalie Patrick Roy is returning to the Colorado Avalanche as its head coach.

The team reached an agreement in principle with Roy to lead the Avalanche and also gave him the title of vice president of hockey operations.

Roy will join forces with former teammate Joe Sakic, who was recently promoted to executive vice president of hockey operations. The Avalanche won two Stanley Cup titles with the duo on the ice and the organization is hoping they can help turn around a downtrodden team.

Denny Hamlin broke the track record with a lap of 195.624 mph to capture the pole for the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C.

Hamlin, who has never won a Sprint Cup race at Charlotte, was one of eight drivers to top the previous record of 193.708 set in October by Greg Biffle.

UCLA’s Turquoise Thompson (56.76 seconds) was the third-fastest qualifier in heats for the women’s 400-meter hurdles in the NCAA West Regionals at Austin, Texas.

The USA men’s and women’s senior national water polo teams will compete in the

FINA World League Prelims starting Friday in Los Alamitos.

The four-day event will feature a mix of official matches and exhibitions. It will include the first competition for the USA women since they won a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics in London. For the USA men, this is their first competition since they qualified for the FINA World Championships in February in Canada.
