Pau Gasol has been cleared to increase his basketball activity, according to the Lakers big man.

Diagnosed with a strained right groin on Feb. 1, Gasol missed the Lakers’ last five games. He spoke briefly in the locker room at Staples Center as his team prepared to play the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday night.

The 7-foot power forward/center was examined on Thursday by Dr. Steve Yoon of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Group.

The Lakers don’t play again until Feb. 19, hosting the Houston Rockets at Staples Center.

It’s unclear if Gasol will be available by then, but the two-time NBA champion noted he was happy with the outcome of his Thursday check-up.

Gasol is averaging 17.0 points and 10.2 rebounds.
