Warriors outlast Celtics in two overtimes to extend record start to 24-0
The Golden State Warriors needed two overtimes to remain perfect on a very imperfect night from the NBA’s reigning most valuable player.
Stephen Curry had 38 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists and the Warriors improved to 24-0 this season by outlasting the Boston Celtics 124-119 Friday night.
The 24-0 start is easily the best in NBA history, and counting wins in their final four games last season, the defending NBA champions have taken 28 in a row. They broke a tie with the 2012-13 Miami Heat for the second-longest winning streak in league history, and now trail only the 33 straight by the Lakers in 1971-72.
Curry was nine for 27 from the field, his worst shooting night of the season. But he was six for 13 from three-point range and 14 for 14 from the free-throw line, sinking a pair of foul shots with 13.4 seconds left to give the Warriors a three-point lead — his only points of the second overtime.
The Warriors end a seven-game trip Saturday at Milwaukee. No NBA team has ever gone 7-0 on a single trip.
Cleveland 111, at Orlando 76: LeBron James had 25 points and eight assists as the Cavaliers beat the Magic for the 12th straight time. Iman Shumpert, out since injuring his right wrist before training camp, made his debut for Cleveland, scoring 14 points.
at Indiana 96, Miami 83: Monta Ellis had 24 points, six assists and six steals to help the Pacers end a three-game losing streak.
Detroit 107, at Philadelphia 95: Andre Drummond had 18 points and 16 rebounds for the Pistons. The 76ers, who dropped to 1-23, announced before the game that Coach Brett Brown had signed a multiyear contract extension.
Oklahoma City 94, at Utah 90: Kevin Durant scored his team’s last 11 points, including a tiebreaking three-pointer with 1:06 left, as the Thunder matched a season high with its fourth straight win.
at New Orleans 107, Washington 105: Tyreke Evans scored 27 points and the Pelicans ended a seven-game losing streak against the Wizards dating to Feb. 1, 2011.
Portland 106, at Phoenix 96: C.J. McCollum scored 26 points and made five three-pointers, and the Trail Blazers took control with a 13-0 fourth-quarter run.
at Toronto 90, Milwaukee 83: DeMar DeRozan had 27 points and the Raptors held on after squandering most of a 19-point third-quarter lead.
Charlotte 123, at Memphis 99: Kemba Walker had 33 points and six assists, leading the Hornets to their fourth straight win.
at Denver 111, Minnesota 108: Danilo Gallinari hit a go-ahead three-pointer late in overtime and finished with 23 points to help the Nuggets end a five-game home losing streak.
