Fountain Valley boys’ soccer take home Irvine Challenge Silver Division title

Fountain Valley High’s boys’ soccer team captured the Irvine Challenge tournament Silver Division championship Monday at University High.

The Barons, behind the three-goal scoring from Chico Cardenas and David Volkert, downed Irvine, 8-3, in the title game.

The three goals by Cardenas now gives him seven on the season. Shayne Shubin and Ryan Erickson scored one goal each and the Barons improved to 6-1-1 overall.

Fountain Valley took on Segerstrom in a nonleague game Wednesday. The score wasn’t available at press time.

In other boys’ soccer action:

Huntington Beach and Marina completed play Saturday at the All Turf Tournament at Huntington Beach High.

Huntington finished 1-1-2 in the tournament. The Oilers opened with a 2-0 win over Mountain View, tied both Los Angeles Salesian (1-1) and Chino Hills (0-0), and lost, 4-0, to Long Beach Cabrillo in a match between second-place pool-play teams.

Marina went 1-2-1 in the tournament. The Vikings (2-4-2 overall) shut down Whittier La Serna, 1-0, getting a goal from Tyler Avila assisted by Ryan Hice. They lost (1-0) to Long Beach Cabrillo, and played Bellflower St. John Bosco to a 2-2 tie with Jovvani Fernandez and Steven Carrera (direct kick) scoring and Avila picking up an assist. In their final match, they dropped a 3-1 decision to Chino Hills. Brian Hernandez scored off an assist from Marc Mandarino.

St. John Bosco defeated Salesian, 1-0, in Saturday’s title game.

Edison played Katella to a 1-1 tie in nonleague play Friday, scoring on a Jack Morrel goal from a Dom Bair cross. The Chargers (5-1-1), despite having only 10 players following a red card call, came back from a 1-0 halftime deficit Dec. 9 against Mission Viejo to defeat the Diablos, 2-1. Bair and Morrel scored goals in the second half.

Ocean View (1-2-2) notched its first victory of the season Friday by shutting out visiting Rancho Alamitos, 1-0. Sophomore Sergio Guzman scored and junior Pablo Ramirez (three) and senior Justin Vargas (one) combined for four saves in goal.

Girls’ Soccer

Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley both competed at the All Turf Tournament which concluded Saturday on the Huntington campus.

The Huntington Beach “Black” (varsity) team went 1-1-2 and tied with Long Beach Millikan in a matchup between teams that finished third in pool play. Huntington’s “Orange” (junior varsity) team went 2-2 and finished fifth.

Fountain Valley went 1-3 and finished seventh at the tournament. The Barons’ win was a 1-0 victory over Murrieta Valley. Leigha Williams scored off an assist from Clarissa Orna and Kiana Flores recorded a shutout in goal for the Barons.

“Our young varsity team has suffered from a lot of injuries this preseason,” Fountain Valley Coach Scott Goldman said. “As players get healthy and return to match fitness, our overall play and performance improves. We look forward to league competition in the New Year as we should return a full squad.”

In the All Turf title game Saturday, Tesoro defeated Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos, 3-1.

In a nonleague game Monday, Huntington received goals from Sawyer Koelsch and Olivia Covert and battled Cypress to a 2-2 tie.

In its final game of its 33rd annual Ocean View Tournament, Ocean View fought Simi Valley Royal to a scoreless tie Monday. Emma Malsy had seven saves and stopped two penalty kicks for the Seahawks who outscored tournament opponents, 18-4, and entered the week 4-1-3 overall. Kaci Montoya scored four goals and had three assists and Madison White two goals and five assists during the tournament.

On the final weekend of the tournament, Lauren Reynolds scored for Ocean View which played Laguna Beach to a 1-1 tie Saturday. In a previous game Friday, the Seahawks defeated Los Amigos, 4-1, getting goals from Montoya, White, Daniela Gonzalez and Iran Enriquez.

Girls’ Water Polo

In a nonleague game between local schools Dec. 9, Huntington Beach was a 16-6 winner at Ocean View. Julia Rozolis-Hill powered her way for eight goals for the Oilers.

Field Hockey

Makenna Wigney of Huntington Beach High has been named to the National Field Hockey Coaches’ Assn. 2015 Harrow Sports/NFHCA West Region Team. Wigney was one of seven athletes and the lone Californian named to the West Region Team.

Athletes from across the country who were selected to the all-region teams were included in their respective region (Massachusetts, MidAtlantic, Midwest, New Jersey, New York, Northern New England, Pennsylvania, South, Southern New England, West).
