Oil prices rebound; gas prices fall

Crude oil prices have rebounded slightly after falling last week to their lowest levels in six months. Retail gasoline prices were falling in California after a painful 18.6-cent jump over the last two weeks. Nationally, the average retail price for gasoline was entering its seventh straight week of declines.

The U.S. oil commodities trading benchmark, West Texas Intermediate, was up 61 cents to $92.09 a barrel during trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, European benchmark Brent North Sea crude was up 86 cents to $108 a barrel on the ICE Futures Europe Exchange.

The rebound came as Chinese government officials said they would focus more efforts on growth. It also came after the leaders of the Group of Eight industrialized nations also said there should be more emphasis on growth in Europe and not on austerity programs alone.

Despite the drop, U.S. oil prices in 2012 are still averaging their highest levels ever, at about $103 a barrel, according to Energy Department...

JPMorgan's Jamie Dimon not worried about potential trading losses

The Wilshire Grand Hotel downtown will be razed to make way for a $1-billion luxury hotel.

Downtown Los Angeles hotel will have lobby on 70th floor

With work set to begin soon on a $1-billion luxury hotel in downtown Los Angeles, developer Korean Air revealed some details about the tower that is expected to dramatically alter the city’s skyline.

The skyscraper will be the second-tallest structure in Southern California at 70 stories, only slightly shorter than the US Bank Tower office building, said Yang Ho Cho, chairman of Korean Air.

The design is still a work in progress, but guests are expected to be whisked by high-speed elevators to the lobby on the 70th floor, where they will check in. The top floor will also have a restaurant, bar and infinity swimming pool.

Korean Air and Los Angeles architect A.C. Martin Partners Inc. have yet to settle on a shape for the building at Wilshire Boulevard and Figueroa Street or pick an operator for the four-star hotel. It will, though, be stacked starting with shops, restaurants and ballrooms on the lowest seven floors.

Next will be 20 stories — about 400,000 square feet — of...

FBI warns about hackers who target hotel guests

The Federal Bureau of Investigation warned travelers to be careful of computer hackers when logging onto the Internet through a hotel connection.

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center recently issued a warning to travelers using these systems to look out for bogus access points and pop-up windows used by hackers to steal information and infect computers with viruses.

Hackers can create wireless access points that on a laptop resemble the Internet service of a hotel, said Karl Volkman, chief technician for SRV Network Inc., a Chicago-based IT management service provider for small and mid-size companies.

Once a hotel guest signs on to the bogus access point, the hacker can read all the information the hotel guest types into a computer, Volkman said.

"You think you have a connection through the hotel but the hacker is reading every keystroke you make," he said.

To prevent such problems, Volkman recommends that hotel guests plug their laptops directly into the hotel system with a...

Southwest Airlines tied for the best rate of seat availability for frequent fliers.

Frequent fliers find seats more often on budget airlines, study says

When it comes time to trade in your frequent-flier reward points for seats on an airplane, low-cost airlines do the best job of getting you in the air.

That was the conclusion of a study released last week by IdeaWorks, a Wisconsin-based consulting company for the airline industry. In March, IdeaWorks submitted nearly 7,000 booking requests through the frequent-flier websites of 23 airlines. Seats were requested for the airline’s most popular routes in June through October.

The study had a 93.5% success rate of finding available seats on low-cost airlines around the world, including U.S. carriers such as Southwest Airlines, AirTran Airways and JetBlue Airways. In contrast, the study had a 62.9% success rate with larger carriers such as American Airlines, US Airways and Delta Air Lines.

In fact, the study found that Southwest had a 100% success rate for locating available seats — tied for the best rate with budget airline Air Berlin. Among other U.S. carriers, AirTran Airways...

Buyers of Olympic-Bundy property plan creative office campus

The West Los Angeles site of a proposed medical office and residential complex opposed by neighbors because of its size has been purchased by a local real estate company that vows to keep its development aspirations in check.

Hudson Pacific Properties Inc. has agreed to pay $89 million for the Olympic Bundy Media Campus, an 11.5-acre collection of properties on Olympic Boulevard between Bundy Drive and Centinela Avenue.

A previous owner, Stonebridge Holdings Inc., planned a 1.3-million-square-foot complex of medical offices, retail stores and housing called Bundy Village & Medical Park.
