Tommy Lee Jones as Gen. Douglas MacArthur; Colin Firth as a loser golfer and Nick Cassavetes’ meditation on drugs and modern society are just a few of the new movie treats added to the packed slate at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival.

Announced Tuesday morning, TIFF revealed a handful of world premieres to bow at the northern festival, set to begin Sept. 6.

Jones stars opposite Matthew Fox in “The Emperor,” a film from Peter Webber (“Girl With a Pearl Earring”) that centers on the American occupation of Japan following World War II.

Firth will play a failed golf pro in the offbeat love story “Arthur Newman,” a story about a loser who is so distraught with his current life that he fakes his own death and creates a new identity for himself. Emily Blunt co-stars.

And directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel take on the Henry James’ novella “What Maisie Knew,” a story seen through the eyes of a 7-year-old girl about the bitter custody battle between her rock icon mother and her father. The film stars Joanna Vanderham, Onata Aprile, Alexander Skarsgård, Julianne Moore and Steve Coogan.

The documentary “Greetings From Tim Buckley,” which chronicles the rise of Jeff Buckley’s career in the days leading up to his inaugural performance at his father’s tribute concert, will also bow for the first time in front of audiences.

The films will be accompanied by Nice Cassavetes’ movie “Yellow,” centered on a young school teacher, her addiction to vicodin and her hallucinatory world that includes circus freaks and farm animals. The festival programmers deem it Cassavetes’ “seminal” work. It stars Sienna Miller, Gena Rowlands, Ray Liotta, David Morse, Lucy Punch, Max Theoriot, Riley Keough, Daveigh Chase, Heather Wahlquist and Melanie Griffith.
