Jazz picks: Brian Charette, Mark Dresser playing L.A.

Brian Charette Trio: Maybe it’s the burden of the equipment, but Hammond B-3 players can seem in short supply lately. Fortunately there’s New York City keyboardist Charette, whose 2013 solo album, “Borderline,” features just the right proportions of refinement and rambunctiousness. Charette will only continue venturing into wilder waters here, backed by drummer Andy Sanesi and L.A.-raised guitarist Rez Abbasi, whose own work explores the intersection between jazz and Indian classical music. Ross Hammond and Vinny Golia: Arising star on the West Coast jazz and improvised music scene, the Sacramento-based Hammond released one of the most invigorating jazz guitar albums of 2013 in “Cathedrals.” Backed by a trio of local greats in Golia, Steuart Liebig and Alex Cline, Hammond blends electronics-soaked excursions reminiscent of Nels Cline with the occasional rock-informed drive that recalls the most propulsive side of Tortoise. CRITICS’ PICKS: What to watch, where to go, what to eat

Mark Dresser Quartet: An L.A.-born musical treasure who has explored the fringes of the jazz avant-garde with collaborators that include Anthony Braxton and John Zorn, bassist Dresser performs in support of “Nourishments,” his adventurous and lovely 2013 album that features saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa and trombonist Michael Dessen. He’s assembled an eyebrow-raising band for this date that includes Dessen, violinist Mary Oliver and the ever-rambunctious percussion powerhouse Han Bennink, who’s a threat to find remarkable rhythms on just about any surface.
