Ever heard of Valdiguié? Watch for it on your next wine trivia test. That's the grape formerly known as Napa Gamay, and it stars in this intriguing bottle from Cruse Wine Co. The vines from Rancho Chimiles Vineyard in Napa Valley are more than 40 years old, giving it some gravitas. Bright crimson in color, the 2013 Valdiguié has a unique flavor profile that grows on you. Light and fruity, it has a lively acidity much like Barbera and a pleasant backlash of tannin.
It's good with grilled or pan-fried sausages, bean casseroles and soups, hoppin' John and such.
Price: About $25
Style: Bright and fruity
What it goes with: Sausages, bean casseroles and soups, burgers, pizza
