Angel City Jazz fest lineup includes Pharoah Sanders, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Ornette Coleman’s ‘Skies of America’ tribute

With this weekend’s Playboy Jazz Festival right around the corner, the Angel City Jazz Festival -- the city’s other, more unfettered jazz celebration – has revealed its lineup for this fall.

Now in its ninth year, the festival again will sprawl around Los Angeles, with nine concerts at seven venues that stretch from the Hollywood Hills to Santa Monica from Sept. 30 to Oct. 16.

Always open to exploring the more experimental and cutting-edge aspects of jazz and improvised music, this year’s installment includes performances by saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, guitarist Mary Halvorson’s trio Thumbscrew, guitarist Julian Lage on a bill with adventurous pianists Kris Davis and Craig Taborn, and a pairing of two trios led by the forward-looking saxophonists David Binney and Steve Lehman.

The festival will also host the West Coast premiere of a tribute to Ornette Coleman’s landmark symphonic piece “Skies of America” by bandleader José Gurría’s Gurrisonic Orchestra, which will be joined by Coleman sideman Tom McNalley on guitar.

Other highlights include saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock in a duo with drummer Tom Rainey, an “Extreme Bass Night” that includes Kamasi Washington sideman Miles Mosley and Tim Lefebvre, the young L.A. band Holophonor, Joel Harrison’s project Spirit House with drummer Brian Blade and alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa, whose band will perform from his lauded Charlie Parker-inspired 2015 album “Bird Calls.”

The festival began in 2008 in a collaboration with Angel City Arts and the still-itinerant Jazz Bakery, which is working toward a permanent home in Culver City.
