Five takeaways from the Clippers’ easy victory over the Mavericks

The Clippers had no problem putting away the Mavericks in a 124-104 victory on Wednesday night in Dallas. The starters were able to rest the entire fourth quarter.

Here are five things to take away from the victory:

1) Austin Rivers drilled three three-pointers in the first quarter, tying his career high for long-range baskets in any quarter, which he now has done four times.

There was a sequence in which he made a three-pointer over Dirk Nowitzki, then stole the inbound pass and hit back-to-back threes.

He looked over at the Clippers bench and nodded his head and bounced back down court.

Rivers finished with 22 points, making seven of 11 shots, including six of seven from beyond the arc.

“It’s funny. He’s struggling,” Clippers Coach Doc Rivers said. “He spent a long time in the gym [Tuesday] working on that and it came through for him. It’s great for him being a young player [when] you work on it and sometimes it pays off.”

2) Clearly, the Clippers have good chemistry.

They can argue on the court, like DeAndre Jordan and J.J. Redick did when the guard was unable to get a pass to his center early in the game.

Then they can move past that, as Jordan and Redick did later in the first quarter when the two combined for a basket when the big center set a screen for his guard to knock down another shot.

“At the end of the day, we call it cooperation, our ability to cooperate with each other,” Rivers said. “That’s our biggest difference right there. Everyone has the green light to yell at everyone, including me. And then we figure it out. We cooperate and we move on. I think as a group, that’s what we’ve done and it’s served us well.”

3) The Clippers made 15 of 32 three-point shots (46.9%).

Besides Rivers going six of seven from three-point range, Chris Paul was two for four, Redick one for four, Luc Mbah a Moute one for two, Jamal Crawford three for seven and Marreese Speights one for two.

4) As soon as Jordan touched the basketball, the fans inside American Airlines Center booed the Clippers center.

It was obvious the fans are still sore at Jordan for jilting the Mavericks in the summer of 2015, when he had agreed to join Dallas as a free agent and instead returned to the Clippers.

So when Jordan stepped to the free-throw line, he was booed roundly. All Jordan did was knock down five of eight free throws in the first half.

For the game, Jordan made six of nine free throws and finished with 16 points and eight rebounds.

5) The Clippers bench showed well yet again. Their 65 points as a group accounted for more than half of the Clippers’ 124 points.

And it wasn’t just Rivers’ 22 points that made the difference. Speights had 16 and Crawford 15

“When that group gets it going, as you’ve seen all year, it’s tough to turn them off,” Doc Rivers said.
