Yasmani Grandal returns to Dodgers’ lineup after shoulder injury
Dodgers catcher Yasmani Grandal says his recent shoulder injury is unrelated to the problem he had at the start of the season.
A day after he sat on the Dodgers’ bench because of a sore left shoulder, catcher Yasmani Grandal returned to the starting lineup.
Grandal had issues with the same shoulder in April — he said it was partly to blame for his slow start — but the recent soreness was unrelated.
Grandal’s early-season problem was the AC joint. The more recent discomfort, Grandal said, was the result of a foul ball that struck him during the team’s recent road series against the Philadelphia Phillies.
“I should be fine,” he said.
Scully in second
A horse named after Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully finished second in a race Thursday night at Penn National Race Course in Grantville, Pa.
The horse that beat Scully? Duke of Flatbush, which was the nickname of legendary Dodgers center fielder Duke Snider.
Scully, the horse, went into the race as the favorite. Duke of Flatbush was a 10-1 longshot.
The broadcaster’s namesake won’t be running in the Kentucky Derby any time soon. The race was a $5,000 claiming race for 3-year-olds who had not won two races.
Extra bases
To clear a place for Hatcher on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers transferred right-hander Carlos Frias to the 60-day disabled list. Frias has been sidelined since July 1 with a tight lower back. … The Dodgers took team photographs on the field Friday several hours before the game against the Reds. After the pictures were taken, the team presented co-owner Magic Johnson with a birthday cake and sang to him. Johnson turned 56.
