Racing! Don’t stop now, one more day of racing

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we get one more day of racing on the long weekend.

It’s President’s Day and a lot of tracks are running that normally take Monday off. Among those are Santa Anita and Golden Gate. And then major ones such as Aqueduct, Fair Grounds, Gulfstream, Laurel, Louisiana Downs and Oaklawn also have cards.

Oaklawn even has a couple half-a-mil races including the Southwest, which is a Kentucky Derby points race. So, all in all, not a bad day to go to your local betting parlor, be that a track, OTB or couch, and watch the races.

In honor of it being President’s Day, I bet you wondering if there was ever a horse named Trump. Well, in fact, there have been seven of them, who have won a whopping $86,349. A couple haven’t started yet, having been foaled in 2016. There is an Oklahoma-bred thoroughbred and an Iowa-bred quarter horse.

Three of the seven were gelded. There was a Nebraska-bred mare foaled in 1993, that had a race record of 23-5-6-5 and an Argentine-bred foaled in 1977 that was 18-3-3-3. The rest really didn’t really do much.

There was also an Australian-bred and a horse bred in Britain. No record was found of any of three foreign-breds racing in the United States.

Olympic observation

Figuring many of you were glued to your screen watching the 15-kilometer mass start biathlon race at the Olympics in South Korea, you probably wondered how they were able to sort out a photo finish of a centimeter in a matter of seconds. Quite the contrast to the amount of time it takes them to sort through a photo finish in a horse race in this country. Maybe racing should hire some of the biathlon tech people. Just sayin’.

Santa Anita review

Selcourt and Coniah engaged in a vicious speed duel but neither wavered down the stretch as Selcourt pulled away at the end to win the Grade 3 $100,000 Las Flores Stakes by ¾ length.

Skye Diamonds, another strong mare going 6 furlongs, was a head back for show.

Selcourt paid $4.20, $3.20 and $2.20 for winning trainer John Sadler.

“Skye Diamonds is a tough mare and so is Coniah,” winning jockey Tyler Baze said. “Those were tough horses she beat today so we’ll see where it goes from here.”

In the secondary stakes race, the $75,000 Baffle Stakes, for 3 year olds 6 ½ furlongs down the hillside turf course, Pubilius Syrus rallied on the outside to win by a length. He had been running at a mile but handled the shorter distance well.

He paid $7.20, $3.80 and $2.80. Afleet Ascent was second and

“What a tutelage job by [trainer] Mr. [Vladimir] Cerin today” wining jockey Kent Desormeaux said. “He was sitting right behind the leaders, just cruising with tons of speed to spare. … There wasn’t a [mile] race for him for another three weeks and he was tearing down his stall, so he needed something to do.”

But the talk of the day was a first-time starter for trainer Bob Baffert called Justify. He won by 9 ½ lengths. Baffert doesn’t think his late start is too much to overcome for the Triple Crown trail.

“It’s not too late,” Baffert told Mike Willman of Santa Anita. “I’ve got a plan. … We’re looking [for a graded stakes race.]”

Santa Anita preview

It’s a special nine-race card starting at 12:30 p.m. The highlight is a pair of Cal-bred races for 3 year olds.

The seventh race is the $200,000 California Cup Oaks for 3 year olds going a mile on the turf. Mick Ruis’ One Fast Broad is the 3-5 favorite. She has three wins in six starts, but none of those wins were in her three starts on the turf. Flavien Prat has the ride.

Pulpit Rider and X S Gold are the second favorites at 4-1. X S Gold is lightly raced with one win in three starts, but the win was by a convincing 4 ½ lengths on the turf. Pulpit Rider has a win at Santa Anita, but on the dirt. She is winless in one try on the turf. The race is seventh, going at about 3:45 p.m.

The other stakes race is the $200,000 California Cup Derby for 3 year olds over 1 1/16 miles. Baffert, no surprise, has the favorite in Heck Yeah. He’s also got Mike Smith in the saddle. Heck Yeah is undefeated in two starts. Faversham, for trainer Art Sherman, is the second choice at 5-1. He was second in his only start. Post time is about 4:15 p.m.

Bob Ike’s SA pick of the day

EIGHTH RACE: No. 11 George From Tahoe (10-1)

Not sure if he will handle dirt, but this Jeff Bonde-trained colt was very impressive breaking his maiden on turf here last month. He seems to have enough tactical speed to overcome the outside post and give a good account. However, beating favorite Heck Yeah won't be easy, so make an exacta box, too.

Sunday Result: Afleet Ascent ran well but was second best in the fourth race.
