Baseball: In 2008, Mike Montgomery and Trevor Bauer were Hart’s starting pitchers

Back in 2008, Hart High’s baseball team was pretty good. Its starting pitchers were future major leaguers Mike Montgomery and Trevor Bauer.

So how did the Indians not win the Southern Section Division 1 championship?

It shows how tough it is to win Division 1.

Hart started with a 5-1 playoff victory over Westlake. Montgomery struck out seven in five innings.

In the second game, Bauer threw a three-hit shutout over Canyon Springs, 4-0.

Then came Long Beach Wilson in the quarterfinals and a matchup of two future major leaguers, Montgomery and Aaron Hicks, who’d go on to become an outfielder with the Minnesota Twins. Hicks won the battle, 4-2. Wilson would end up losing in the championship game to Simi Valley in nine innings.

Bauer is 6-5 with the Cleveland Indians. Montgomery has thrown consecutive shutouts for the Seattle Mariners.

They were pretty good in high school and they’re pretty good now, but in the Division 1 playoffs, there’s no guarantees on anything.
