Gooding's body was slumped over the wheel of his Jaguar in 22100 block of Ventura Boulevard about 1 p.m., according to officials.
Sources familiar with the investigation but not authorized to discuss the death said alcohol containers and drug paraphernalia were found in Gooding's car.
Gooding, 72, rose to fame as the lead singer of The Main Ingredient and was known for hits including "Everybody Plays the Fool" and "Just Don't Want to be Lonely."
