Cyclist struck, killed by train in north San Diego County

Man struck, killed on tracks in Vista is region's third cyclist-v.-train death this month

A 48-year-old man riding a bicycle was struck and killed Monday night by the light-rail train Sprinter in Vista, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said.

The man attempted to cross the tracks at 8 p.m. even though the crossing gates were down and the safety lights were on, according to the Sheriff's Department.

The train operator applied the brakes but was unable to stop. The bicyclist, who was not immediately identified, was transported to a local hospital, where he was declared dead.

The Sprinter, part of the North County Transit District, serves a 22-mile east-west corridor between Escondido and Oceanside with 15 stations.

Two men have been killed in the past week by freight trains on the heavier north-south tracks that parallel the coastline. A 40-year-old man was killed in Encinitas and a 22-year-old man in Carlsbad were both fatally struck by trains of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railway.
