One man was killed and another was shot in the back after a fight outside a Boyle Heights nightclub early Monday morning, authorities said.

At about 1 a.m., a security guard at the club in the 2100 block of East Cesar Chavez Avenue heard gunfire outside and, when he went to check, saw one man in his 20s lying on the sidewalk and another who was shot in the back, said Lt. Carlos Solano of the Los Angeles Police Department.

The man on the sidewalk, who was not immediately identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. The man who was shot in the back, also in his 20s, was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, they said.

HOMICIDE REPORT: A story for every victim

Solano said the shooting occurred after "some kind of verbal dispute between those two victims and another group of people."

He added that no witnesses in the case had yet come forward.

The shooting is the second homicide in Boyle Heights so far this year, according to The Times' Homicide Report.

On Jan. 17, 25-year-old Oscar Alberto Felix was shot and killed in the 600 block of North Fickett Street.
