Speeding Honda jumps freeway, is hit by train, killing car’s driver
A driver in his early 20s was killed Sunday night when his speeding car flew off Interstate 5 south of San Onofre State Beach and was hit by a southbound Amtrak train, the California Highway Patrol said.
The driver of a 1997 Honda was traveling at more than 100 mph and weaving in and out of traffic shortly after 9 p.m., the CHP said.
The driver attempted to avoid a collision with another car but lost control. His car flew off the freeway and landed on the railroad tracks, the CHP said. Approximately 10 to 15 seconds later the car was hit by an Amtrak train.
No one was injured aboard the train, which was bound for San Diego from San Luis Obispo.
The San Diego County medical examiner has tentatively concluded that the driver was 24 years old and from either Squaw Valley or Costa Mesa. It was not immediately known whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the incident, the CHP said.
