Good Samaritan helps find suspect in fatal East Hollywood hit-and-run
One person was killed and another arrested--after a good Samaritan chased him--following an early Friday morning hit-and-run in East Hollywood, authorities said.
A driver in a car traveling eastbound on Santa Monica Boulevard near Normandie Avenue struck a pedestrian in a crosswalk about 1:50 a.m., said officer Rosario Herrera of the Los Angeles Police Department.
“The suspect fled the location, but was later detained,” Herrera said.
The male victim, who was not immediately identified, was taken to a hospital, where he died.
Fernando Luis, a witness, told KABC-7 the driver “had their lights off, they didn’t see the pedestrian crossing, so they hit the pedestrian really hard, and the pedestrian went flying.”
After the collision, the driver lost control and ran into a parked car, KABC-7 reported. Witnesses told the station that he fled on foot and they reported that a good Samaritan chased after him.
“I ran as fast as I could down Edgemont looking for this guy, and there was another vehicle that was right behind us that followed me the whole way and put their high beams on, and searched the opposite side of the street while I was looking down the other side of the street,” Tony Hoff told the station. “We found him and we brought him back.”
Hoff said the suspect was covered in blood and talking on his cellphone when he found him.
