An officer-involved shooting took place Tuesday evening in downtown L.A. when officers witnessed an assault, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

The shooting happened about 7 p.m. in the 600 block of Wall Street after officers responded to a report of a disturbance at an apartment complex.

When officers arrived, they witnessed “someone being assaulted,” at which time the shooting took place, police said.

The suspect was taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said. No officers were injured.

The investigation is ongoing.
