Armed man fatally shot by LAPD in Pico-Union identified

A man shot and killed by plainclothes LAPD officers in Pico-Union was identified Wednesday as 37-year-old Juan Chavez, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.

Chavez approached the officers with a gun around 9 p.m. Tuesday on the 1700 block of Pico Boulevard, officials said.

The two officers fired back, said Sgt. Michael Mabie of the Los Angeles Police department, and Chavez was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was unknown how many shots were fired.

A group of suspects was seen running into a nearby church. Officers searched inside but did not find any suspects, said LAPD spokesman Christopher No.

An investigation was ongoing, but no other suspects were being sought, No said.
