Man plunges to death off Vincent Thomas Bridge

Authorities are working to confirm the identity of a man who jumped to his death Sunday night from the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro.

Just after 8 p.m., the man drove his car to the top of the bridge, stopped and climbed out, leaving it running with the headlights on, said Port of Los Angeles spokesman Phillip Sanfield.

The man, who was in his 40s, climbed a security fence, which is about 10 feet high, and jumped into the water below, Sanfield said.

A passenger boat retrieved the man, and rescue workers attempted CPR without success, Sanfield said.

Traffic was temporarily suspended on the bridge.

It is the same bridge from which “Top Gun” director Tony Scott jumped to his death last August.
