A 22-year-old bicyclist was struck and killed Saturday night by a Metrolink train in Palmdale after he pedaled around the crossing gates, officials said.

The unidentified man was hit at 7:10 p.m. by a northbound train at the Palmdale Boulevard crossing, said Metrolink spokesman Scott Johnson. He said the man “did not obey the crossing gates, the bells and the lights” at the crossing near Sierra Highway.

The No. 269 train, carrying 257 passengers, was three-quarters of a mile south of the Palmdale station on its way to Lancaster, Johnson said. After the incident, the train remained at the location for about two hours as Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies investigated, he said.
