Officer shoots at man brandishing shotgun; suspect still at large

Los Angeles police are still collecting evidence from a crime scene near a South L.A. intersection where an officer fired two shots at a man who police say pointed a shotgun at officers early Sunday morning.

During a routine patrol near Normandie Avenue and 54th Street around 1 a.m., two officers observed a possible robbery, said Sgt. Donni Ellison of the Los Angeles Police Department’s 77th Street Station.

At one point, the suspect -- a man described to be in his early 20s and wearing a trench coat -- pointed a shotgun at the officers’ patrol car, Ellison said. One of the officers then jumped out and fired two shots at the suspect.

Police aren’t sure if either of the shots hit the man, who fled on foot and was still at large after police finished a sweep of the immediate area.

Police recovered a shotgun at the scene.
