An inmate at a Northern California prison was shot and wounded Monday by a guard, ending the brutal stabbing attack on a prisoner by three others, authorities said.

Shortly before 10:30 a.m., three inmates repeatedly stabbed a fourth inmate at California State Prison Sacramento, the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said.

The three inmates ignored verbal commands, prompting guards to deploy a blast grenade and fire one round with a rifle, prison officials said.

One of the assailants was struck by a bullet and taken to a hospital for surgery.

The stabbing victim was also taken to a hospital for medical treatment, and both men were listed in fair condition, prison officials said. Their names were not released.

Two other inmates were also injured and were treated at the facility in the 100 block of Prison Road in Represa.

Inmate movement at the maximum security facility has been limited as investigators probe what happened, prison spokeswoman Terry Thornton said.

Investigators have recovered three stabbing weapons made by the inmates.

Located on an 882-acre lot, the facility houses inmates who are serving long prison sentences or “those that have proved to be management problems at other institutions,” according the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation website. The facility shares property with Folsom State Prison, Folsom Women’s Facility and California Prison Industry Authority.

The facility opened in 1986 and was run by the Folsom prison warden. At the time, the prison was called New Folsom. But the facility’s name changed in 1992 and is operated as a separate prison with its own warden.
