17-year-old shot to death Friday in East Los Angeles; third slaying in the area in the last year

A 17-year-old teenager was shot to death Friday afternoon in East Los Angeles, authorities said.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's homicide detectives were investigating the shooting, which occurred about 4:20 p.m. at Ditman Avenue and East 6th Street, according to the department. 

The sheriff’s office said no other details of the incident were immediately available.

The victim, described only as a Latino teen, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The shooting occurred just a block in either direction from Rowan Avenue Elementary School and Robert Louis Stevenson Middle School.

According to The Times' Homicide Report, there have been three slayings in the past 12 months within a mile of Friday's shooting.
