Mariners shut down the Angels, 3-1

KEY MOMENT: Trailing, 2-1, in the sixth, the Angels put runners on second and third with one out when Mike Trout singled, Albert Pujols was hit by a pitch and Erick Aybar bunted the runners up. But Seattle's Taijuan Walker struck out David Freese and got Matt Joyce to fly to deep right.

AT THE PLATE: Trout drove his 19th homer of the season and first in 13 games deep into the right-field seats in the first. The Angels, who have scored 13 runs in their last six games, put two on with one out in the eighth, but Johnny Giavotella grounded into a 5-4-3 double play. Seattle scored in the fifth when former Angel Mark Trumbo doubled to right and came home on Brad Miller's double to left and in the sixth on Austin Jackson's single and Nelson Cruz's RBI double. Robinson Cano hit a solo homer in the eighth.

ON THE MOUND: Angels right-hander Matt Shoemaker (4-6) allowed two runs and seven hits in six innings. In his previous two starts, he gave up eight earned runs and 14 hits in 92/3 innings. Walker (6-6) allowed one run and seven hits in seven innings, striking out six and walking none.

IN THE FIELD: With a runner on third and two outs in the third, Aybar, the Angels shortstop, backhanded Jackson's grounder in the hole, leaped and made a one-hop throw to first for a run-saving out. The Mariners executed a perfect relay play in the fourth to cut down Aybar, who was trying to stretch a double to right-center into a triple.

AYBAR OUT: Aybar left the game in the top of the seventh because of left-hamstring tightness, an injury he suffered running to first on his sixth-inning bunt. Aybar missed two games in late May because of the same injury, and Manager Mike Scioscia does not believe this injury is serious.

REHAB REPORT: Tyler Skaggs, 11 months into recovery from Tommy John surgery, threw off a mound again Friday. He said he “feels real good” but he will not pitch this season.

ON THE RISE: Top pitching prospect Sean Newcomb, a left-hander who is 3-0 with a 3.82 ERA in eight starts for Class-A Inland Empire, has been selected for the July 12 Futures Game in Cincinnati.

UP NEXT: Right-hander Garrett Richards (7-5, 3.66 ERA) will oppose Seattle left-hander J.A. Happ (3-4, 3.78 ERA) at Angel Stadium on Saturday at 4:15 p.m. On the air: TV: FS1; Radio: 830.
