USC’s Lane Kiffin isn’t looking too far ahead

The last time USC lost in triple-overtime, the Trojans came back the next week and began a 34-game winning streak.

Heading into Friday night’s game at Colorado, Coach Lane Kiffin has more modest goals coming off a triple-overtime defeat against Stanford.

“We’re just trying to get one in a row,” he said Monday. “We’re not worried about 34 right now.”

This is the Trojans’ first trip to Boulder, Colo., since 2002, when quarterback Carson Palmer led USC to a 40-3 victory in the second game of the season.

Colorado is struggling mightily in its first season in the Pacific 12 Conference.

The Buffaloes are 1-8 overall and 0-5 in conference play under first-year Coach Jon Embree. Colorado’s victory was against Colorado State, 28-14.

Since then, the Buffaloes have lost six games in a row, including the last four by an average margin of 36.5 points.

USC, which defeated Notre Dame the week before losing to Stanford, was off Monday. The Trojans will have only two full practices and a walkthrough before departing for Colorado on Thursday.

“We’re still going to find ways to get our time in to make sure our guys are really prepared for a very difficult adversity-type game,” Kiffin said.

Kiffin said the weather — temperatures could be in the 20s — and playing on a Friday night in a nationally televised game on ESPN would require the Trojans to be focused.

“Emotionally, just making sure we’re up for the game and playing really well,” he said.

Colorado is 11th in the Pac-12 in offense and defense and last in the conference in scoring, rushing offense, rushing defense and scoring defense.

Kiffin said he expected a physical game in front of a crowd that will be up for the Trojans’ visit.

“We better be ready,” he said, “because I promise you they’ll be ready.”
