Dodgers’ Josh Beckett to undergo season-ending surgery

Josh Beckett’s season is over.

The Dodgers right-hander next week will undergo an operation designed to help him regain feeling in his pitching hand. The surgery is scheduled for the week of July 8 in Dallas. Dr. Greg Pearl will remove Beckett’s top rib to relieve pressure on a compressed nerve that is believed to be the source of the problem.

Beckett, 33, is expected to be ready for spring training next year. He is under contract for $15.75 million in 2014.

The decision to have surgery came after Beckett experienced tingling in his fingers while throwing on flat ground Friday. Before resuming his throwing program this week, Beckett hadn’t picked up a baseball for four weeks.

Beckett admitted last month that he feared he might never pitch again.

“Any time something like that happens to your arm or you start losing feeling and stuff ... you think about it for sure,” Beckett said.

Beckett made eight starts this year and was 0-5 with a 5.19 earned-run average.
