Brandon McCarthy and two relievers throw four-hit shutout

KEY MOMENT: The Rockies had the tying runs on base with one out in the sixth inning and their best hitter, Troy Tulowitzki, at bat. Dodgers starter Brandon McCarthy challenged Tulowitzki with fastballs — one clocked at 96 mph — and got him to ground into a double play on the seventh pitch of the at-bat. That ended the top of the sixth, with the Dodgers up 2-0, and the home team scored five runs in the bottom of the inning to end any suspense.

AT THE PLATE: The Dodgers hit seven doubles — one shy of the Los Angeles record — among 10 extra-base hits. Outfielder Scott Van Slyke homered once, doubled twice and drove in three runs. Outfielder Joc Pederson homered and doubled, infielder Howie Kendrick homered, and infielder Justin Turner tied a career high with four hits and a club record with three doubles.

ON THE MOUND: McCarthy and relievers Adam Liberatore and Juan Nicasio combined for the Dodgers’ first shutout of the season, a four-hitter. McCarthy pitched six innings and struck out six. Clayton Kershaw leads the major leagues with 26 strikeouts; McCarthy is tied for second with 25. In the six-game homestand, the Dodgers bullpen pitched 20 1/3 innings and gave up one run, striking out 28.

PUIG UPDATE: Outfielder Yasiel Puig, hampered by a sore left hamstring, sat out for the fourth time in five games. Although a torn hamstring could sideline Puig for weeks, Manager Don Mattingly said the Dodgers’ medical staff is confident there is no undue risk in keeping him on the active roster rather than putting him on the 15-day disabled list to ensure the hamstring heals. “The DL was part of a conversation earlier,” Mattingly said. “If they say DL, I’m fine with it. I like the way Andre [Ethier] is playing. I’m not going to push to get Yasiel in the lineup. It’s way too early in the season for that.” Mattingly said he hoped Puig could start when the Dodgers resume play Tuesday.

EXTRA BASES: It has been one month since Hyun-jin Ryu last pitched, and he says the pain is gone from his left shoulder, but Ryu has yet to throw a bullpen session. He declined to say when he might return but laughed and said, “Of course,” when asked whether he would be back by the All-Star break. … Outfielder Carl Crawford (flu-like symptoms) did not play. … Mattingly said the Dodgers would push Zack Greinke back from Thursday’s series finale in San Francisco to Friday’s series opener in San Diego. He declined to identify a starter for Thursday.
