Favre won’t rush decision

Brett Favre is going to take his time before deciding whether to return with the New York Jets next season.

The 39-year-old quarterback told ESPN on Thursday that he’s following the advice of Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum by not making a hasty decision on his future.

“He said he’s not going to bother me for three or four weeks,” Favre said. “He told me to do whatever, and he’d give me a call in a month. Maybe I will tell him my answer that day. But he told me to get away and don’t even think about football.”

Favre says he plans to make a quiet decision without a public news conference if he does retire, unlike the emotional departure last off-season when he announced he was stepping away from the game only to return a few months later.

Favre is disappointed with how his first season ended with the Jets, who lost four of their last five games and missed the playoffs after an 8-3 start. He takes a large part of the blame but said that wouldn’t necessarily increase his desire to come back.

“I have the ability to turn it off just like that,” he told ESPN. “I don’t feel I have anything else to prove. Do I have to redeem myself for the last five games? No. I could be trying to do that until I’m 60 years old. There is nothing left out there for me from that standpoint. I’m disappointed with the last five games, sure, but I know I did everything I could have.”

Injury updates

Arizona wide receiver Anquan Boldin says he won’t give his injured hamstring a serious test until just before kickoff of the Cardinals’ divisional playoff game at Carolina on Saturday night. The Pro Bowl wide receiver sat out practice for the third day in a row Thursday to rest the injury. Boldin strained his left hamstring on a 71-yard touchdown pass play from Kurt Warner in the second quarter of last Saturday’s 30-24 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. “If I played any other position, I’d be fine,” Boldin said, “but being a receiver you’ve got to run every play and it’s definitely tough.” . . . The New York Giants had everyone on the roster practice Thursday for this weekend’s NFC semifinal against the Philadelphia Eagles, the first time in more than three months no one has been sidelined by an injury.

Coaching updates

Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier will interview with the Detroit Lions today for their head coaching job. . . . Denver owner Pat Bowlen wrapped up his first round of interviews for the Broncos’ head coaching vacancy Thursday when he met with Miami Dolphins secondary coach Todd Bowles. Bowlen hasn’t spoken publicly about the search since he began interviewing head coach candidates, starting with Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels last weekend on the East Coast.
