Baseball: Rodriguez brothers could meet up again in Las Vegas

Nick Rodriguez, the standout shortstop from Granada Hills Kennedy, has moved on to UNLV, where he hopes to be a major contributor as a freshman.

“He loves it,” said Kennedy Coach Andy Rodriguez (no relation).

Left behind was brother Estevan, the Valley Mission League player of the year as a junior. UNLV is starting to pay attention to the younger Rodriguez, according to Andy Rodriguez.

Estevan is playing for the Cubs scout team this fall after batting .444 last season for the league champion Golden Cougars.

While Birmingham, Chatsworth and El Camino Real are considered the City Section Division I title favorites in baseball, don’t count out Kennedy, which returns seven of nine starters, including both of its starting pitchers, Gilbert Hernandez and Felix Rubi.

Estevan is moving to No. 3 in the batting order, the position Nick held last season.

One Rodriguez brother is better than none in the Kennedy lineup.
