Football: It’s payback time when Chaminade faces Crespi on Friday

Crespi, once a top 25 team, is struggling with a 1-8 record this season and ends its season on Friday with a home game against Chaminade.

Let’s just say that Chaminade will have no sympathy for the Celts. A year ago, Crespi inflicted the most embarrassing defeating in Coach Ed Croson’s recent stint at Chaminade, 48-17, when the Celts didn’t attempt any passes and ran for more than 400 yards.

Asked if he was going to mention last season’s game, Croson said, “They know what happened last year. We got embarrassed.”

Chaminade (5-3, 2-2) is very much in contention for a Pac-5 Division playoff berth. The Eagles need a win over Crespi or Gardena Serra next week to probably finish in fourth place. Then the at-large criteria will come into play.

Chaminade’s win over St. Bonaventure in a nonleage game will help.

The criteria: Head to head competition (four points), overall strength of the league (one point), overall win-loss record (one point), strength against common opponent (one point), strength of schedule using overall win-loss record of opponents (two points).

Last season, the Trinity League got both at-large berths, which didn’t go over well with the Mission League.
