Baseball: Santa Margarita, Orange Lutheran win National Classic openers

The Trinity League doesn’t begin until next week, but Orange Lutheran and Santa Margarita are tuning up in the National Classic. Each won their opener on Monday. They were supposed to meet in the second round but organizers have changed the bracket since they are league opponents.

Luke Mattson allowed one run in six innings and Zachary Lew had two hits in Orange Lutheran’s 3-1 win over West Ranch. Santa Margarita defeated De La Salle, 7-3. Johnny Carr had a two-run double and Andrew Mendonca and Jared Jennings had back to back home runs.

Santa Margarita will face Agoura at noon at El Dorado. Orange Lutheran will play Monte Vista at 3 p.m. at El Dorado.

Ayala won its opener, 8-6, over nationally ranked Tennessee Christian Brothers. Freshman Daniel Mendez had two hits and two RBI. Matthew Acosta added two hits. Ayala advances to a 3 p.m. game at Esperanza against Cypress, which defeated Spanish Fork, 6-4. Cypress used five pitchers.

Agoura’s Ben Baird went three for three in the Chargers’ 5-2 win over JW North. Byrce Fehmel added two hits. Jack Price allowed one run in 3 1/3 innings. Loyola lost to IMG Academy, 3-2, despite Henry Stellwagen striking out nine and allowing only two hits. Both were to Nick Derr, who had a double, home run and drove in three runs.

In other games around the Southland, El Modena defeated Mission Viejo, 4-1. Derrin Poencet allowed three hits. Brett Conine had a double and single.

Beckman defeaed Oak Hills, 9-5. Isaiah Bull had two hits.

Jordan Myrow’s bases loaded single in the seventh lifted Sherman Oaks Notre Dame past Glenn, 5-4.

La Mirada improved to 3-0 in the St. Paul tournament with a 10-2 win over Narbonne. Jakob Gonzalez threw a complete game. Aaron Lizaragga had four hits, including three doubles.

Sophomore Danny Zimmerman threw a four-hitter in Redondo’s 3-1 win over Long Beach Millikan.
