Robitaille One Shy of Dionne

When the Kings take the ice tonight in San Jose, left wing Luc Robitaille will be looking to equal or better a team record.

With his two-goal performance in a 4-0 victory over Phoenix on Thursday, Robitaille moved to one goal shy of tying the scoring record of 550 goals, set by center Marcel Dionne.

“Luc not only wants to score goals to break the record, he wants those goals to help us win games,” Coach Andy Murray said.

The two players’ careers nearly bookended one another. Dionne came to the Kings in 1975 and played here for 11 seasons. Robitaille has played 14 seasons for the Kings, spread over 20 years, beginning in 1986.

The Pacific Division-leading Kings (27-14-2) are on a hot streak with nine victories in their last 11 games and the Sharks (17-16-5) are last in the division.

The teams have split two games this season.

In the first game, at Staples Center, the Sharks prevailed, 5-4, when Jonathan Cheechoo scored with 3.7 seconds left.

The Kings then won at home Dec. 26, 4-3, thanks primarily to power-play goals by Michael Cammalleri, Joe Corvo and Craig Conroy. It was the Kings’ first victory over the Sharks in three years.
