L.A. Loyola pulls together to beat Pasadena, 80-56

At various times during Tuesday’s Southern Section Division 1AA second-round basketball playoff game, individuals stepped up to make huge contributions for Los Angeles Loyola.

There was Trey Mason making his first six shots and scoring 15 points in the first quarter. There was 7-foot center Thomas Welsh, scoreless in the first half, blocking four shots and scoring 12 points in the second half. There was Mtume Armour making two clutch three-point baskets.

There was Parker Jackson-Cartwright controlling the ball in the fourth quarter and playing his “Closer” role to perfection, helping turn a precarious two-point lead into an 80-56 victory over Pasadena.

For the Cubs (22-6) to keep their season alive past this weekend, though, it’s going to take a collective effort, because Friday in the quarterfinals, they’re set to play host to No. 2-seeded Long Beach Poly, which beat Lakewood Mayfair, 73-28.

“We win as a team,” Coach Jamal Adams said. “We need multiple guys making plays. We need to have multiple threats on the floor to make teams play honestly, and that allows everyone else to have more space.”

Mason finished with 21 points, Jackson-Cartwright had 19, Welsh 12 and Armour 10. Andre Spight led Pasadena (21-6) with 14 points and Brandon Jolley had 13.

The Bulldogs trailed, 50-48, with under six minutes left when Armour connected on a three-pointer and Jackson-Cartwright made a three-pointer.

Then panic began to set in and frustration, too. Pasadena Coach Tim Tucker was called for two technicals. Then Raymond Jackson picked up two technicals. It was not a good way to end a productive season for the Pacific League champions.

“We lost our composure,” Tucker said. “As a coach, I have to do a better job than that, but I thought there were some things that didn’t go right tonight.”

The big upset Tuesday in 1AA was Silverado knocking off No. 3 Corona Centennial, 77-75. In another upset, Inglewood defeated No. 5 Rancho Cucamonga, 76-51. Both are in the same bracket as No. 1 Santa Ana Mater Dei, which defeated Downey Warren, 74-47.
